I travel quite a bit this time of year for work and, let’s face it, airports and unfamiliar cities sometimes make it hard to find good choices. I’m actually heading to Nashville today for the week, so I thought I’d pull together some of my favorite Paleo and Whole 30 compliant “on-the-go” items that make travel less stressful.
“No Added Sugar. No Dairy. No Soy. No Gluten. No B.S.” is RXBAR’s motto. I have one of these bars in my purse on me at all times, regardless of if I am traveling or at home. They’re the perfect “emergency stash” of fuel. Their entire ingredient list is listed right on the front of the package. It’s food made from food. Currently, all RXBAR flavors are Whole 30 compliant with the exception of the Peanut Butter flavor (see RX Bar FAQ here). My favorites are Maple Sea Salt and Coffee Chocolate. There’s also a Pumpkin flavor available in the fall.
Important: If you are doing Whole 30, just be sure you are relying on these bars as a source of fuel and not needing it for it’s sweetness or eating them out of habit.
A friend of mine recently introduced me to these grass fed beef sticks at their CrossFit gym and I was instantly hooked. They’re the perfect protein-packed snack to keep in my bag to munch on in-flight or when I’m in need of some fuel. All three of their flavors are officially Whole 30 approved! This variety pack on Amazon will let you sample all three.
Traditional beef sticks are filled with sugar, MSG, nitrates, corn syrup and soy. Plus who knows what sort of sketchy meat is used. Avoid them at all costs!
If you follow me on Instagram, you know I like to make “bulletproof coffee” in the mornings by blending my brewed coffee with coconut oil. The healthy dose of fat in your morning coffee is a great source of lasting energy for your body. Rather than packing up my Ninja for a trip, I get these to-go packs of MCT oil on Amazon to put into my coffee. It’s already in a liquid state, so it blends really well. While it doesn’t get creamy and frothy like mixing it in a blender would, it does the job in a pinch.
I sort of wish they would just call these “jerky” instead of “meat bars” because, I won’t lie – it took me a while to build up the courage to try one. But TRUST ME – they are delicious. It’s sort of like a thicker, softer jerky. These are becoming more and more popular in regular grocery stores and I’ve even found them in airport convenience stores (yay!). They are packed with protein and Epic makes some “non-traditional” options like Venison, Wild Boar, Smoked Salmon, Bison and Lamb as well as your more traditional Chicken, Beef and Turkey.
Read your labels, though, as not all of their flavors are Whole 30 compliant. As of 4/6/2017, the complaint flavors are Venison Sea Salt, Beef Habanero Cherry, Turkey Almond Cranberry, Lamb Currant Mint, Beef Apple Bacon and Chicken Sriracha.
